Emotions and Experiences of Parents of Children with Liver Transplants: A Qualitative Study

Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the emotions and experiences by parents of children had liver transplants.
Method: Parents of 12 children who had liver transplant surgery were included in this qualitative study. Qualitative data were collected through face-to-face, in-depth and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using the thematic (descriptive) analysis method and 3 main themes were created.
Results: As a result of the research mothers; it was determined that when they first learned about the diagnosis of their children, they experienced the feelings of shock, sadness, disappointment, guilt and helplessness, and the fathers were very upset. It was determined that when the mothers were told that they needed a transplant, they saw it as a beacon of hope and salvation from the disease and applied to be a donor. It was determined that all of the fathers had quit their jobs and had financial difficulties due to their children's illness.
Conclusion: It was determined that parents whose children underwent liver transplantation mostly felt sad and experienced difficulties.
