Associated Factors and Family Functions in Families with Disabled Children

Abstract

Aim: Evaluating the family functions of families with disabled children and determining the related factors. Methods: The descriptive study was conducted in a special education and rehabilitation center between June 2016 and 2018. The universe consisted of 186 literate parents who had children registered in the rehabilitation center, had no communication problems, and did not use the sampling method, and the whole universe was studied. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews with the Questionnaire and the Family Evaluation Scale. Data were analyzed using percentile, mean, t-test, ANOVA and nonparametric tests when parametric evaluation and Cronbach's alpha coefficient calculation. Ethical principles are adhered to. Results: In the study, parental family functions were found at a healthy level (1.68±0.35), but to be in an unhealthy level in roles (2.13±0.41) (%62.9) and interesting in need functions (2.36±0.37) (%93) of parents. Conclusion: Generally, parents’ roles, behavior control and interesting in need functions are at a significantly higher and / or unhealthy level according to almost all characteristics of children, mothers, fathers and families are shown that parents should be professionally supported for these functions.
