Evaluation of neonatal and pediatric intensive care nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the use of physical restraints
Yenidoğan ve çocuk yoğun bakım hemşirelerinin fiziksel kısıtlama kullanımına ilişkin bilgi, tutum ve uygulamalarının değerlendirilmesi
Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of nurses working in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units regarding physical restraints and to determine the factors influencing the use of physical restraints in children.
Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study included a total of 87 nurses working in the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units of a public hospital. Data were collected using the “Scale for Nurses’ Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Regarding Physical Restraints.” Based on the obtained data, comparative analyses were performed according to nurses’ sociodemographic and professional characteristics, and correlation and regression analyses were conducted.
Results: The mean scores of nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding physical restraints were 8.93±1.35, 33.00±5.51, and 35.08±2.80, respectively. A positive correlation was found between the number of patients cared for by nurses and their practice scores (r=0.320, p=0.003), as well as between knowledge and attitude scores (r=0.262, p=0.014). Furthermore, the number of patients cared for had a significant positive effect on practice scores, and knowledge had a significant positive effect on attitudes (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that nurses’ levels of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding physical restraints were generally at a moderate to good level, and that these levels were influenced by various factors. Moreover, nurses’ knowledge levels were found to affect their attitudes, while the number of patients they cared for influenced their practices.
